Recent History of Santa Monica Mountains

The attention to the Rim of the Valley Corridors was brought forth on May 8, 2008 with the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008 which had been approved under Title ll, Subtitle C, Section 327, “Rim of the Valley Corridor Study”.  This authorized Secretary of Interior to execute a special resource study of the Rim of the Valley in California including the preservation and use of the land. Furthermore, this act authorized the Secretary of Interior to examine the suitability and feasibility of implementing the corridors as well as develop the methods for protecting these corridors. In addition, this act will serve to determine whether certain parcel of lands should be included in the Santa Monica Mountains National Park.
Although this bill gives attention to the corridors and wildlife in the Santa Monica Mountains, this study belongs to a larger bill called the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008. The law requires the study area to be investigated for at least three years before recommendations can be made on the expansion of the Santa Monica Mountains.  This study has clearly shown environmentalists, researchers, and the Department of Interior that preserving linkages between mountain ranges is crucial for wildlife.  However, one of the major problems with the idea of preserving linkages between mountain ranges is "the fear that the species in the Santa Monica Mountains will become isolated, and this promotes inbreeding, disease and a decline in the gene pool," said Woody Smeck, superintendent of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation area (Doyle, 2008). In 2002, the National Park Services conducted a study that showed lion cubs were surviving in this area (NBC News, 2002). Despite this positive result, the National Park Services announced on November 6, 2013, the DNA of a dead mountain lion found near Liberty Canyon exit. This further proves the importance of implementing corridors for wildlife protection.
